Dr. N. M. Markandeya, Associate Dean

Dr. Niteen Manmohanrao Markandeya is born on 22nd July, 1963 at Vairag, Dist. Solapur of Maharashtra State. He did his graduation in the year 1985 and post-graduation in the year 1987 from College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Marathawada Agricultural University, Parbhani. He holds All India Rank in qualifying prestigious Agricultural Research Services (ARS) cum National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB), New Delhi in the discipline of Animal reproduction in the year 1990. He started his career by joining Department of Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Maharashtra as Livestock Development Officer in the year 1987. His quest for teaching, research and extension encouraged him to join Marathwada Agricultural University services as a faculty of Animal Reproduction in the year 1988. Based upon his experience, skills and utility, he was entrusted upon with the higher responsibility of the post of Associate Professor in the year 1997. Subject knowledge, leadership capabilities, ability to lead from the front in addition to experience made led him to the post of Professor of Animal reproduction by Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University, Nagpur in the year 2006.

Dr. Markandeya was awarded travel fellowship under young scientist category for presentation of paper during Indian Science Congress, Cochin in 1990. His professional horizons were widened after his Israel tour for an International Training Programme in Dairy Management by Israel in the year 1999. His merit was awarded by the Israeli hosts by bestowing upon him a travel fellowship.

His research interests are in the areas of Clinical Gynecology and ruminant infertility. He has 195 published research papers in leading journals of National and International repute with NAAS score 554 and h -index as 7 and i10 index as 4. Dr. Markandeya is known in national research circuit in the Animal Reproduction by his participation in 10 International, 37 National and 29 Regional conferences. He is a member and executive Committee member of many national level scientific bodies including ISSAR. He is referee of about a dozen Indian Journals in various areas of Veterinary Sciences. He has contributed in research by implementing about 37 research projects funded by various pharmaceuticals and one ICAR funded ad-hoc research project.

Professional contributions of Dr. Markandeya include organization of a total of 32 training courses for field veterinarians in the technological aspects. He also participated in training courses as a resource person in courses organized by other state universities and institutes. Digital format of communication in the form of online book was also being used by him by contributing a chapter in “Bubaline Reproduction” book.

Dr. Markandeya has distinguished career in Veterinary Extension field. His contributions in print and electronic media for transfer of technologies and scientific aspects to farmer breeders and dairy owners form nook and corner of the state include 900 publications in local language, 55 Radio program, 45 Media program, 12 Marathi published books, 23 Audio and Video CDs. His contributions in Lab to Land programme include participation in 150 infertility camps, 145 technical lecturers to field veterinarians, 150 animal judging competitions and 450 lectures for dairy entrepreneurs.

Dr. Markandeya also contributed in various government programmes like literacy mission through animal husbandry orientation for rural neo-literates. He wrote umpteen short stories in contemporary language and Govt. of Maharashtra awarded him Best Writer Award for Neo-literates successively for three years from the year 1992 to 1994. Similarly, Ministry of Panchayat Raj, Govt. of India included views of Dr. Markandeya in their technical publication for Gram Panchayat in a book entitled, “Animal Husbandry in Gram Panchayat” in the year 2015.

Dr. Markandeya is a recipient of many awards and honors for his extension activities which include prestigious Late Vasantrao Naik Award for three times in the years 1996, 2006 and 2013; Rishabh Shree award by Bharatiya cattle resource development foundation, New Delhi for conservation of native Indian cows in 1996; R. N. Subnis Award for book on infertility in 2007; Best veterinarian Award by senior veterinarians forum, Pune in 2007; Baliraja Awards, Pune for popular articles on animal husbandry in 1997, 2003 and 2010 and Krishiratna award by Agrotech publication and Jai Maharashtra channel, Mumbai for his career in rural upliftment in 2015. He is proud recipient of best paper presentation award and Dr. S.N. Luktuke memorial extempore presentation award of ISSAR during year 1997.

Maharashtra State Board of literature and Culture has awarded Vasantrao Naik award 2015 to Dr Markandeya consisting of Rs 1 Lac, memento, gift books and certificate for his best Marathi book script “Maaj sankalan tantra” published in the Agriculture and allied sector. He is felicitated by Krishi Mauli Award 2017 (Appreciation memento) by Shri Swami Samarth agricultural development and research charitable trust, Nasik for contributions under animal husbandry sector. Laxmikant Kokil Irrigation write up award 2017 (Rs 2000, certificate and book Gifts) by Maharashtra irrigation Sahyog for informative script write up is also available to his credit and recently, he has been blessed by Dr Ramchandra Parnekar memorial Dyan-Vidyan Award 2018 ( Rs 11000/- , Memento, citation ) by Jivan Kala Mandal, Parbhani for contributions to cow science.

By virtue of his recognized contribution through Academic, Research, Training and Extension in the field of Animal Reproduction, The Indian Society for Study of Animal Reproduction (ISSAR) has bestowed the Fellowship of the Society.
